Barack Obama…President of the United States

I’m back. Still not over the shock but I wanted to share my thoughts. Minutes after posting that Obama had won I took my brother, sister and neighbor joy riding through Philadelphia to celebrate the victory. The streets were flooded with Obama supporters (and of course the police were out there heavy), young and old alike. At first I was riding through the streets…honking my horn (which doesn’t work anymore…lol) and yelling things like “Obama!”, “We did it!”, and “We just made history!” They aired his speech on the radio. I blasted it and drove through the streets slapping high fives with people I didn’t even know. People were riding on top of their cars, dancing in the streets, and hanging out of car windows. I let out a few tears while driving and listening to Obama speak. But it wasn’t until I reached Broad and Chestnut Sts (Center City Philadelphia) and saw the crowd gathered there with police baracades all around them that I began to really cry out. All I keep thinking was that at some point we were slaves, people owned us, WE COULDN’T EVEN VOTE…and now BARACK OBAMA IS THE 1ST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. And furthermore I’m glad I’m alive to witness this historical moment. I had to call my brother on the phone. When he answered I said, “Barack won! I told you you were gonna make history today!” As I stated before this was his first time voting and right before I had him hit the “Vote” button I told him to take a deep breath and take it all in. After he hit the “Vote” button I told him had just made history. I’m overwhelmed with emotions. I can’t believe it. When I finally went to lay down (I couldn’t sleep…too excited) I looked at my son, laying there sleeping like a little angel and whispered to him, “Baby, Barack Obama is the President. You can be one too.” We’ve all been told that we can be anything we want to be but being President of the United States never seemed real until now. I am proud. I feel good. I get teary eyed everytime I think about it. This man is the epitome of what a good man, a strong man, is. He’s always poised. He has handled every situation thrown at him in a dignified and tactful way. We all know that behind every strong man is a strong woman. Michelle Obama has definitely played her part throughtout this election. Yesterday, people were laughing at me because I was calling everyone I knew making sure they made it out to vote. I made about 4 trips to the polls taking people to go vote. Even in the 11th hour (7:45pm to be exact) I started calling people all over again to make sure they voted. I know that I did my part and couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I still can’t really find the words to explain what I’m feeling right now on the inside. I can’t wait for the inauguration speech. I’m sure I’ll shed tears then too. Hopefully I’ll be there. Oh yeah and I’m definitely taking my son to the White House to tour it and meet the 1st African American President!! Obama! Obama! Obama!
Check out the acceptance speech!
